Welcome to the May edition of Griffith Guidance

The last four weeks have been a busy time for all in the lead up to the end of Term 2. Preparations for Open Day (15 July) and TSXPO (21 & 22 July) are underway, and as usual, the Promotions Team has been out and about presenting to students, delivering brochures and finalising the bookings of all school visits for 2007. We participated in both the Brisbane and the Gold Coast Careers and Employment Expos, where we spoke to thousands of students about Griffith’s programs, courses and campuses. In addition, we held our annual Guidance Officer / Career Adviser Seminar on the 3rd of May which proved to be a great success.

Guidance Officer / Career Adviser Seminar update

Thank you to all who attended our Guidance Officer Seminar on Thursday 3 May this year.  We had 115 guidance officers from Brisbane, Northern New South Wales, Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Toowoomba and Rockhampton on our Nathan campus to hear about Griffith University in 2008.

Focusing on new and altered programs, along with changes and initiatives for 2008, the presentations were ‘short, sharp and shiny’ – an improvement on previous years, and much more positively received.

We understand time constraints regarding attendance of events however for those guidance officers / careers advisers who were unable to join us this year, you can expect to receive 2008 guides in the post shortly.

Please note: all presentations made at the Guidance Officer / Career Adviser Seminar can be found at www.griffith.edu.au/er/got (resources).

Feedback / 2008 Seminar

The feedback we received regarding the Guidance Officer Seminar in 2006 enabled us to make improvements such as the style and length of presentations for 2007. We would greatly appreciate feedback once again, in order to have our 2008 seminar more aligned with what you requests. We welcome any feedback via email: promotions@griffith.edu.au. Thank you.

If you would like further information regarding our programs, or additional copies of undergraduate and area guides, please contact us at promtions@griffith.edu.au. If you have already placed an order for these brochures, they will be sent to you shortly.

Website for Guidance Officers / Career Advisers & Teachers!

This website has been prepared by the Promotions Team to provide information about our school liaison activities as well as quick links to frequently requested information, such as power point presentations.

New program - Bachelor of Public Health

The School of Public Health has announced a new undergraduate program, Bachelor of Public Health, being offered from 2008.  The Bachelor of Public Health is a three-year degree being offered at Griffith's Logan and Gold Coast campuses.  With an underlying philosophy that prevention is better than cure, the program focuses on the systems and practices that shape the health of nations, communities and individuals and the environments in which they live, work and take their leisure.

Upon completion of a foundation year, students will then be able to undertake majors in: Nutrition, Health Promotion; Environmental Health; and Workplace Health & Rehabilitation. The Nutrition, Health Promotion and Environmental Health majors will be offered at Logan and Gold Coast campuses.  The Workplace Health & Rehabilitation major will be offered at Logan only.  Students who wish to complete a second major may undertake an additional 80CP in excess of degree requirements.

Public health professionals are currently in high demand. The Bachelor of Public Health will provide students with opportunities to explore a diverse range of career paths with high rates of employment, upon completion of their degree.  Graduates of this program will be well-positioned to take up employment in the health industry at all three levels of government and in the private and not for profit sectors. Opportunities will be available both in community health and in health care organisations.

New program - Bachelor of Science (Water Resources)

With drought, water recycling and desalination dominating the national agenda, the water resources industry has reached a new level of complexity. An innovator in water sciences, Griffith University developed the new Bachelor of Science (Water Resources) to meet the needs of this rapidly growing industry.

The only Australian undergraduate degree of its kind, it will produce graduates with the sound biology and chemistry knowledge of a science degree, coupled with skills in the social and community aspects of water resource management, conservation and restoration. As a student you'll learn from leading researchers at Griffith's Australian Rivers Institute (www.rivers.edu.au), the largest concentration of university-based water scientists in Australia and have access to the $18m Queensland Smart Water Research Facility now under construction at Griffith University.

School of Dentistry and Oral Health Update

A Unique Dental Degree
Dentistry at Griffith consists of a 3-year undergraduate Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science, which, upon successful completion gives automatic entry into a 2-year Graduate Diploma of Dentistry. The Graduate Diploma of Dentistry is only open to those students who have successfully completed the Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Science at Griffith University.
